The stage towns of the GORE-TEX™ Transalpine-Run 2008 – Sand in Taufers

Lauf Etappe Sand in Taufers   In our second part we are introducing the finish town of the fifth stage. Those who think a small community in South Tyrol is just in the back of beyond will be put right. Sand in Taufers offers much more than the engagement as stage town of the GORE-TEX™ Transalpine-Run 2008. Together with its small municipalities a wide range of activities are provided.

But it’s not only about hiking like on the walkable Kellerbauweg connecting the Sonnenklarhuette at the Speikboden and the Edelrauthuette in Weissenbach or tours to the Riesenfernerhuette at the Gaensebichljoch which will be the highest peak to conquer on this years routing being situated on 2,971 metres above zero. It’s also about some other events like the fair in Muehlen. The best Tyrolean people of the country are celebrating this festival once a year attracting many visitors from far and wide.

In addition, Sand which is nestled in by mountains between and is located 865 to 1,600 metres above zero maintained its lively character as main town of the valley. The market town with its 5,000 inhabitants and about 3,000 spare beds also has a colourful and complex range of sport activities. For example Ahornach, situated high above Sand, is a paradise for hang-gliding and paragliding. In Rein, cross country skiers and hikers are getting their money’s worth. Those who are seeking for rest will find the spot to be in Kematen, a small village just off a bemused church of pilgrimage.
